100 years ago — 1920

SALISBURY — Charles Coons Jr. has been quite ill with a hard cold.

LIME ROCK — Miss May Goux is in the Sharon Hospital, owing to poisoning in one hand.

SALISBURY — Malcolm Spurr has had his residence wired for electricity.

The Lakeville High School basketball team defeated Ore Hill last Friday night, the score being 18-16.

LIME ROCK — J. Parmelee and N. Surdam are moving in Mrs. Owen’s house and expect to work the farm the coming year.

Three dead deer were seen floating down the Housatonic River at Great Barrington a few days ago.

50 years ago — 1970

Stewart and Ann Hoskins have repurchased The Lakeville Journal from Robert Francis and are once again sole owners of the stock in the newspaper corporation. Mr. Francis has returned to college fund-raising, a field in which he has had previous experience. The Hoskins, who had planned to retire in 1971, now expect to continue in their jobs for an indefinite period.

SHARON — Anne H. Haydock, West Woods Road, is among the students named to the Dean’s List at the University of Vermont for the fall semester.

The first Easter Egg Hunt to be sponsored by the Cornwall Park and Recreation Commission last Saturday was a huge success, with an estimated half of Cornwall’s population including both children and adults in attendance.

CANAAN — A.A. Saunders is a patient at Sharon Hospital. Mr. Saunders is a well-known authority on birds.

25 years ago — 1995

A preliminary agreement to purchase The Lakeville Journal and Millerton News from Hatch Newspapers Inc. was announced Wednesday by William E. Little Jr. of Lakeville, who has assembled a group of locally-based investors to acquire the two weekly newspapers.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

Students dressed in neon lined the soccer field for senior night under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 16. The game against Lakeview was the last in a series of competitions Thursday night in celebration of Homecoming 2025.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The poster promoting the Homecoming dance boasted the event would feature dancing, games and a bonfire. Reactions to the planned move outside were mixed, with some students excited about the changes and others expressing a desire for tradition.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
