Millbrook Rotary selects button winner

MILLBROOK —  On Dec. 31, the Millbrook Rotary will celebrate the 12th annual New Year’s Eve Millbrook (NYEM). It is a fun-filled New Year’s Eve family event, featuring entertainment from new acts as well as long-time favorites. Upon arrival, participants can make a small donation and receive a NYEM button, which is necessary to access the multiple events. The button’s design was created by a Millbrook High School student.

The Millbrook Rotary chose the 2016 NYEM button design  of rising senior Kayla Critelli. Her concept will serve as inspiration for the final design, which will be distributed to members of the community at the NYEM event.

Students in each art class were given the opportunity to enter their designs into the Rotary contest. They submitted their artistic entries to high school art teacher  Michael Spross.

“Our job was to accomplish and create many designs and give them to Mr. Spross,” said Critelli. “I was given a contest sheet, and I took a day to complete it to the best of my ability.”

The winning student is given a $100 award, along with the pride that comes with their design being displayed on more than 1,000 buttons.

Critelli, who has taken art classes through middle school and high school, was ecstatic when she discovered that her design had won.

“I was really proud of myself when I found out that I won the contest because I worked really hard on my design” said Critelli. “I was happy to accomplish something for my community.”

The young student was presented with her prize and congratulated by the Millbrook Rotary President David Greenwood.

For Critelli, winning was a rewarding but also humbling experience. She said she is grateful for the role that her art classes have played in her high school experience.

“Art is a class that I really look forward to throughout the day because it’s my time to just relax and enjoy art,” she said.

Critelli is also appreciative of Spross’s unending support for her as an artist and the atmosphere that he creates for his students. He encourages his students to flourish as artists and create work that is unique.

Critelli said she is excited to have contributed inspiration for the final design for the NYEM button and pleased to have participated in the contest.
