New plaque proposed

PINE PLAINS — "The Masons have graciously said they will donate another plaque and there’s one that we left blank," said town Supervisor Gregg Pulver as he described the rocky area at the head of the rec fields where another plaque already sits.

Now the Masons from Stissing Lodge 615 have requested permission from the town to provide a matching bronze plaque to complete the memorial at the Lions community recreation area. They presented a diagram to the Town Board April 16 to share their idea.

The plaque, if approved, will read: "Under the pine trees the chiefs of a Mohican Indian tribe were buried. Pine Plains was named for these trees on the plains."

"That’s a great idea," Pulver said. "And to put a big, state, historical plaque with nice language, that’s going to make a nice addition to that area. I’m pretty happy that they would consider doing that."

Pulver said it will not only look good, but it might also teach the adults and children alike something about their town.

"Hopefully all the children who come down to play ball at the rec area will read it and learn something about the town," he said. "I think it’s a great idea, how Pine Plains was named. It really fits in nicely down there."
