New staff named at Webutuck

WEBUTUCK — The North East (Webutuck) Central School District Board of Education (BOE) appointed 20 new instructional, support and extra-curricular staff during its meeting on Monday, Aug. 7.

Based on the recommendation of Superintendent of Schools Ray Castellani, the board appointed James Corbett as a technology/media communications teacher, beginning Friday, Sept. 1, 2017 through Sept. 1, 2021. Corbett replaces technology teacher John Roccanova of Webutuck High School.

The board accepted typist Anuradha Pandey’s resignation, as of Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The board approved the appointment of Marcella Wheatley as a typist to replace Megan Carr, effective on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Under the recommendation of Castellani, the board approved Gail Quick’s appointment as a substitute teacher, which will become effective on Wednesday, Sept. 6, with a salary of $90 a day, and as a substitute teacher assistant with a salary of $11.96 an hour.

The BOE also approved 13 individuals to be mentored for the 2017-18 school year, each with a mentor and a specified stipend.

With a stipend of $999,  mentees Audrey Couture-Toonkel, with Karen Kleespies as mentor; Ken Yamanita, with Sarah Martin as mentor; Concetta Lanza, with  Monica Baker as mentor; Megan Fisher, with Patrick McKeever as mentor; Tyler Albrecht, with Kathleen Howard as mentor; James Corbett, with Lauren Marquis as mentor; and Megan Langton, with Jessica Quartarano as mentor, were approved.

With a stipend of $499.50, the board also approved mentees Danielle Fridstrom, with Christine Gillette as mentor; Daniel Hart, with Denise Conway as mentor; Kari Mahaffey, with Conway as mentor; Sean Lubbers, with Cindy Dietter-Smith as mentor; Katie Hollis, with Jenna Garofalo as mentor; and Sarah Esposito, with Kevin Kleespies as mentor.

Other positions for the 2017-18 school year included Sean Lubbers as the 10th grade advisor, Kelly Shalian as the French Club advisor and Craig Wickwire as the National Honor Society advisor. The positions will all entail a stipend.

At the start of the meeting on Monday, Aug. 21,  Castellani announced that the new teacher orientation was scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Open house for both Webutuck Elementary School and Webutuck High School has been scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 13, while open house for Eugene Brooks Intermediate School is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11.

The board accepted the instructional resignation of Ken Yamanita, a high-level math teacher, effective on Friday, Sept. 1. The motion was made first by member Richard Keller-Coffey, then by member Judy Moran before it was opened for discussion.

After fellow board member Nikki Johnson asked whether the board had recently hired Yamanita, Castellani explained that while they had hired him in the beginning of the school year, he had advised the board he would be working elsewhere due to personal reasons. Since the 2017-18 school year starts in two weeks, Moran said she was not in favor of letting Yamanita out of his contract without 30 days’ notice.

“I would personally be in favor of holding him to it,” said BOE President Kristen Panzer before Moran made a motion to amend the resolution to reflect that Yamanita’s resignation date will be on Monday, Sept. 18.

The motion passed unanimously and, on a positive note, Castellani said there are already candidates for Yamanita’s position.

The board approved the appointment of two substitute support staff members. Starting Tuesday, Aug. 22, Glen MacGillivray is a substitute cleaner with a salary of $13.36 an hour. On Wednesday, Sept. 6, Jessica Cashin will step into the substitute teacher assistant and substitute teacher aide positions, both with a salary of $11.96 an hour.

The board accepted a donation of $1,767.15 from the recent graduating Class of 2017 to the Webutuck Quest Educational Enrichment Fund.
