Student athlete of the week: Sam Cadman

Age: 17 (senior)

Sport: Swimming (boys team co-captain, with Tim Kruger)

Events: 50-meter and 100-meter freestyle

Why do you swim? “I enjoy it. I started swimming at the Grove in Lakeville when I was a kid, I was on the Salisbury swim team. I prefer freestyle, it’s the stroke I do best. It’s an easier stroke to learn, there’s less technique.

Parents: Fred and Mary Cadman of Lakeville

What’s your strategy for winning? “I get pysched up before a meet, but I try to stay relaxed. And I take huge breaths while I’m swimming.

How is this season looking? “We’re doing better as a team. People feel like they’re more a part of it. We’re establishing a new identity and hoping the younger swimmers can absorb what we’re teaching them. We have a new team cheer, we’re trying to increase team spirit.

“As captain, I try to make the swimmers more accountable for their actions, and remind them that they’re part of a team and we need them to be there.

Other sports played: Football and track.

Future: “I’m going to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and I hope to do something in business when I graduate. I’m not sure if I’ll swim there. It’s Division Three, so maybe.
