FFA Holiday Production in full swing

FALLS VILLAGE — Although the halls of Housatonic Valley Regional High School are always bustling, activity seems especially fervent during the month of December, particularly in the Agricultural Education wing, where students are participating in Holiday Production, a yearly event that turns the greenhouse into a busy shopping center.

The mood is intense, yet cheerful as FFA members and advisors cut and bunch evergreen branches to make wreaths, carefully arrange holiday centerpieces, sleeve and wrap poinsettias and recommend trees best suited to one’s needs.

The store is open through Sunday, Dec. 23,  from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.  Items for sale include an assortment of trees (ranging in price from $20 to $55), wreaths ($12 to $40), table centerpieces ($15 to $30), poinsettias ($6 to $40) and decorative roping ($3 per foot). In addition, various types of cheese will be sold ($3 to $12).

All proceeds benefit the Housatonic Valley FFA Chapter, and a portion of sales will be donated to the four local food pantries.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
