Vera (Carlson) Olsen

MILLERTON — Vera (Carlson) Olsen, 93, of Palm City, Fla., died at the Hospice House of Palm City on March 23, 2011. She was born Jan. 17, 1918, and raised in Darien, Conn., the daughter of the late Katherine (Austin) and James F. Carlson. She attended Darien public schools and graduated from Darien High School and Connecticut Teachers College. She taught in the public school system of Darien for many years.She was predeceased by her first husband, Warren Brown, also of Darien. Upon retiring in 1974, she married Olaf Olsen and moved to Millerton, where they resided until his death in 2007. They summered in Millerton and wintered in Palm City. They both enjoyed traveling and gardening and were active members of Millerton’s First Presbyterian Church and the Palm City Congregational Church. All who knew her enjoyed Vera’s wonderful outlook and youthful zest for life, which lasted through the final days of her life.Vera is survived by a sister, Audrey Lindsey of Roanoke, Va.; five stepchildren, Susan Breier of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Cathy Vawser of Etna, Maine, Cynthia Ramsey of Chugiak, Alaska, Ronald Olsen of Millerton and Marilyn Midwood of Millerton; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.A memorial service will be held at the Millerton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 10, at 2 p.m. A private burial will be held at the family’s convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Millerton Presbyterian Church, PO Box 427, Millerton, NY 12546.

The school's girls and boys teams were named league champions after finishing the regular season with the best win/loss records. Winning the tournaments earned each team a plaque and added to the program's success in 2025.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
