Peter J. Flynn

FALLS VILLAGE—Peter J. Flynn, 93, died April 6, 2016, at Sharon Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Margaret Hanlon.

Peter was born Jan. 5, 1923, also at Sharon Hospital, the second child and oldest son of Agnes (Walsh) and Peter Flynn of Lakeville. A tiny 4 pounds, 5 ounces at birth (with a twin who did not survive), he spent his childhood on Wells Hill Road and graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1940.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force and became a co-pilot of B-17s in the 341st Bombardment Squadron, flying long-range bombing missions from southern Italy in 1944.  After surviving his requisite number of missions, he returned to the United States and fulfilled the remainder of his service transporting military airplanes around the nation.

After the war, he returned to Lakeville and became a self-employed electrician, marrying in 1956 and later moving to Falls Village.

He was an enthusiastic golfer for many years, enjoyed downhill skiing and had a lifelong fascination with baseball, in his youth as a participant and later as a loyal fan of the Red Sox. A quiet, methodical man with a penchant for routine, in his later life he delighted in sudoku and crossword puzzles; in political news and political biographies; in watching birds at the feeder and sports of all kinds on TV.

Peter is survived by a sister, Patricia Stanton of Helena, Mont.; two children, Peter of Salisbury  and Kathleen of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Juliana, of Stonington, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a younger brother, Jack; and two sisters, Mary and Gertrude.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Church in Lakeville on Saturday, April 16, at 10 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, which did amazing work in making the last year of his life the best it could be.

The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of the arrangements.
