Pine Plains summer track program welcomes crowd on first night

PINE PLAINS — With schools out for summer vacation, the Pine Plains Summer Track program returned for another season on Monday, July 10.

Organized by Tara Sullivan, Chris LoBrutto and Kate Osofsky, the annual summer program will be held every Monday night at 6 p.m. on the track behind Stissing Mountain High School until Aug. 7.

Registration for the program is free for Pine Plains residents and $10 for nonresidents.

According to Osofsky, the program was re-established in the Pine Plains community on July 23, 2012, after an absence and has been very popular ever since.

“I think it’s just a fun time for families where they can bring their kids and participate in these fun events,” she said, adding that the program draws attention to sports that the children can participate in during  their high school careers.

This year’s program will introduce alternate track skills to participating families, including a child-friendly shot put, long jump and relay races.

At the booster shed, hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks will be available for purchase — all to benefit the Bomber Booster Club.

In its first night of the year, the program saw more than 85 children in attendance. Osofsky reflected onthe success of the program. She described how parents enjoy cheering their children on in the field events, such as the 100 meter, 200 meter, 400 meter and 4x100 relay races. She said children are also always delighted to receive ribbons for first, second and third place as well as for their participation in the program.

Families are also encouraged to stop by the track to register on any Monday night until the program ends.
