Planning Board forges ahead despite few members at meeting

WASHINGTON — Although the lack of a quorum prevented the town of Washington Planning Board from completing business at its Tuesday, Sept. 3, meeting at the Town Hall, some public hearings were conducted.A public hearing concerning Anstu Farm at 409 Overlook Road on an application for 13.76 acres of wetland in connection with retrofitting pre-existing ponds could not be ended because of the lack of a quorum. However, in answer to a question from Jerry Baker, the water that runs off will go to the Long Island Sound in one direction and to the Hudson River in another. The hearing will be continued at the Tuesday, Oct. 1, meeting.Under old business, the request for a wetlands permit for a landscape enhancement project involving the creation of a waterfall associated with an existing pond and adjacent enhanced stream and supplemental plantings at 342-344 Route 343 was discussed at length. It was stated that the current water flow is easily handled and that any increase in water flow also can be handled easily. It also was stated that there is a need to inspect the property before the Tuesday, Sept. 24, workshop of the Planning Board.A pre-application by Sebastian Bulfamante of 114 Christian Hill Road for a special permit to construct a second dwelling on a 62.37-acre parcel will need fire department approval on the driveway and possible approval on two wells. To be continued at the Sept. 24 workshop.The Evangelical Free Church of Clinton Corners applied to change the parking lot lighting on a new site plan and change the driveway entrance. To be continued at the Sept. 24 workshop.Under new business, Francois Maisonrouge requested a lot line revision on the east side of Route 343 — 3,500 feet south of Butts Hollow Road. The revision would add 30.82 acres from an adjacent parcel to be added to an existing 9.66-acre parcel, totaling 40.48 acres. It may be set up for a public hearing on Oct. 1.A pre-application discussion was opened by Ed Demirjian of 170 Milewood Road for placement of a pre-fab barn for two horses, on his 11-acre property. To be continued on Oct. 1.As the final piece of business, an inquiry was made by Laura Becker about requirements needed to purchase the late Dr. David Hammond, DVM building on Route 44 in Mabbettsville. The building will be used for a dog rescue service. Advice and printed forms were given for future presentation to the board.

A scenic 32-mile loop through Litchfield County

Whenever I need to get a quick but scenic bicycle ride but don’t have time to organize a group ride that involves driving to a meeting point, I just turn right out of my driveway. That begins a 32-mile loop through some of the prettiest scenery in northern Litchfield County.

I ride south on Undermountain Road (Route 41 South) into Salisbury and turn right on Main Street (Route 44 West). If I’m meeting friends, we gather at the parking area on the west side of Salisbury Town Hall where parking is never a problem.

Biking Ancramdale to Copake

This is a lovely ride that loops from Ancramdale north to Copake and back. At just over 23 miles and about 1,300 feet of elevation gain, it’s a perfect route for intermediate recreational riders and takes about two hours to complete. It’s entirely on quiet roads with little traffic, winding through rolling hills, open countryside, picturesque farms and several lakes.

Along the way, you’ll pass a couple of farmstands that are worth a quick visit. There is only one hill that might be described as steep, but it is quite short — probably less than a quarter-mile.

Saturday, July 5: Shed Opening Night at 8 p.m. Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Daniil Trifonov plays piano in an All-Rachmaninoff program. The Piano Concerto No. 3 was completed in 1909 and was written specifically to be debuted in the composer’s American tour, at another time of unrest and upheaval in Russia. Trifonev is well-equipped to take on what is considered among the most technically difficult piano pieces. This program also includes Symphonic Dances, a work encapsulating many ideas and much nostalgia.
