Public hearing this evening on proposal for cell tower cell tower proposal

KENT — The proposal to build a 150-foot cell phone tower on Maple Street will face public scrutiny during a hearing of the Planning and Zoning Commission on Thursday, June 14, at 7 p.m.

"The meeting will allow people to express their opinions," First Selectman Ruth Epstein said.

Representatives from Verizon Wireless are expected to attend the meeting to provide a description of the project.

"At the very least lawyers from Verizon will be present but we expect engineers from the company also," Epstein said.

Residents and members of the commission will then be allowed to ask questions and raise concerns regarding the proposal.

Representatives will also present the commission with paperwork to show the state Siting Council has reviewed and approved the tower plan.

While questions posed at the hearing will play an important role in the project’s progress, the commission has little authority over the placement of the tower. The state Siting Council has virtually sole jurisdiction over whether and where cell towers are built in Connecticut.

Although the hearing is the first public forum for discussion on the project, it will not be the last. The Siting Council will also conduct a public hearing in Kent at some point during the summer.

Epstein said the lease agreement for the site at 38 Maple St., a property owned by the town, is being "fine tuned."

"Our lawyers are tweaking [the agreement] right now," Epstein said. "Jeff Sienkiewicz [the town attorney] has been going through it with lawyers from Verizon and it’s almost done."

The terms of the multi-year lease will be made public and will eventually go to a town vote, though Epstein was not sure when this would occur.

If approved, the town will receive a rental income from the property.
