Remembering Keri Lyn Perotti at Angel in the Infield

NORTH CANAAN — The presence of the late Keri Lyn Perotti was felt during the fourth annual Angel in the Infield slow-pitch softball tournament in North Canaan on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15.

“She’s up there making sure the weather stays nice,” said her father, Charlie Perotti, who was organizing the teams at Segalla Field (there were also teams playing at Lawrence Field).

Keri Perotti died in 2012, when she was 21, in a car accident. She was a popular young woman and a great athlete. The Angel in the Infield tournament was created to honor her memory and to raise funds for two scholarships.

“They’re both for $1,000,” said Perotti. “One is for a student at a two-year college, and one is for a student at Housatonic Valley Regional High School who has played three varsity sports in his or her senior year.”

This year, eight teams from North Canaan, Pittsfield, Great Barrington and Sharon participated.

Usually there are nine or 10 teams, Perotti said, but it turned out that a number of families had children graduating from college that weekend.

“Ideally,” he said, “we like to have 10 teams.”

Teams were divided into an American League and a National League, with the final games played on Sunday.

The American League champion was the R.J. Beham team from Sheffield, Mass.  The National League champion was the Captain Crew team from North Canaan.

“Keri used to play on [the Captain Crew team],” event organizer Rene Boardman said. “So it was truly a bittersweet moment for them all to win in her memory.

“All the teams played their hearts out for Keri, and the support from the community was incredible.

“On behalf of the tournament committee, we would like to thank all who helped us — the umpires, sponsors, volunteers, the fire department for selling food, and everyone else we had on board who helped the weekend run smoothly.”
