Sharon girls play perfect season

SHARON - The Sharon Center School girl's basketball team enjoyed a phenomenal season, compiling a perfect 10-0 record under head coach Scott Pastre.

"It was a great season," Pastre said. "The girls went unbeaten - but we faced some tough competition. North Canaan was definitely a big rival of ours."

It was a game against North Canaan that was most prominent in Pastre's mind when asked about the season.

"We were behind with eight seconds to go and we were able to score a basket to win it," Pastre recalled. "It was a very exciting win, a real standout game for us."

Pastre noted that the keys to the team's success were their skills and their cohesiveness as a team.

"We had some really excellent teamwork, and they played each aspect of the game well," Pastre said. "The got the job done."

Eighth-grader Brittney Pastre (forward and captain) was the team's leading scorer, and the coach credits her with generating a good portion of the team's offense while fellow eighth-grader Morgan Wilcox (point guard and captain) did an excellent job handling the ball and providing assists.

Center Sheri Rybczyk, also an eighth grader, provided a strong presence under the hoop and distinguished herself by leading the team in rebounds. Guards Morgan Riley and Cheyenne Nettleton, both strong players in their own right, rounded out the starting five.

The playoffs are slated to start on Feb. 21 with the Sharon and North Canaan teams receiving first round byes. The teams that will be playing in the first round include Cornwall, Falls Village, Kent and Salisbury.

Location and match-ups for these games has yet to be determined; home field advantage will be given to the team with the higher seed ranking in the tournament. The second round quarter finals will be played Feb. 25; the championship game will be played at Housatonic Valley Regional High School on Feb. 28.

When Jennifer Chrein first stepped inside the cavernous mill building on Whiting Street in Winsted and looked up at the towering figures of the American Mural Project, she had no idea what she was walking into.

“I had been invited by a friend to attend an event in May 2024,” Chrein recalled. That friend, she said, had a ticket they couldn’t use and thought she’d enjoy it. “I didn’t know anything about AMP. I didn’t Google it — nothing.”
