What in your opinion is the job of a state senator in the 30th District?

“The job of state senator primarily includes three components: constituent service, helping to shape statewide policy through legislation and advocating on behalf of the municipalities within the district. In order to be most effective in performance of any one of these three responsibilities, being accessible and responsive is key.

“Constituent service involves helping residents when they are having difficulty with a state agency or need information about state government. Effective representation on legislation involves soliciting opinions, engaging in open dialogue and, most importantly, listening to the opinions of residents. Providing project assistance to municipalities when asked, from bridge replacement to brownfields cleanup, and advocating for funding are important roles of any state senator as well.”

Bill Riiska

Experience: Riiska is an attorney who has had a local practice for more than 30 years. He served for 12 years on the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) in Norfolk and was both chairman and vice chairman at times. He has spent nearly two decades on the Government Relations Committee of Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.

What in your opinion is the job of a state senator in the 30th District?

“At its most basic, a state senator’s task is to consider and vote on legislation. If that were enough, our current office holder would fill the bill.

“For years, the 30th District had the model state senator in Andrew Roraback. Whether or not one agreed with his position on any one issue, no one could challenge his leadership, advocacy on behalf of the district, and service. He took strong positions on proposed legislation and tried to shape the outcome. He forcefully advocated for the towns, persons and businesses when they faced issues in dealing with state government.

“When he took office, Chapin said he would be like Andrew Roraback. He is not. Senators should have a broad knowledge of the issues that the people of the entire district face, a proven ability to work in a non-partisan manner to get things done and a willingness to break with convention when the interests of the district and the state require it. He should be a strong voice for the district in Hartford.”
