Student art shown in Hartford

KENT — Four Kent Center School students had their artwork displayed, along with works by other students throughout the state, at the Connecticut Scholastic Art Awards exhibit at the Silpe Gallery at the University of Hartford.

The show, which was held in January, featured works by eighth-graders Bianca Scofield, Hunter Rainard, John Grusauski and Amanda Kitik.

“The fact of having artwork selected for judging is an honor in itself, art teacher Al Coffill said in an e-mail to The Journal. “Art displays, art shows and outside art exhibits give the students a chance to showcase their talents. What a wonderful tie-in to the many art galleries and artists in the town and region.

Bianca’s artwork is a pastel still-life drawing. Hunter and Amanda used an oil pastel technique for their still-life drawings. John entered a black-and-white photograph. Hunter, Amanda and John also received honorable mentions.

“I think art gives children and adults the opportunity to express themselves in creative ways, Coffill wrote. “Being creative gives each child a sense of enjoyment. Our everyday lives are filled with visual images. Why not create your own?

Coffill said each student at the school is given a chance to try different techniques and materials in art class.

“The final results are often wonderful pieces that show the expressive talent of the students, Coffill wrote.

The artwork entered at the show is currently being displayed in the lobby of the school.
