Too many heroes in town to list them all

NORTH CANAAN — A request from the American Red Cross for a list of local “heroes” was answered in a rather unexpected way by the Board of Selectmen. At its Dec. 3 meeting, the board voted unanimously to salute all the “hometown heroes,” rather than try to name a few.“They couldn’t give us enough pages,” First Selectman Douglas Humes said. “The list would be a mile long.”He and Selectmen Susan Clayton and Charlie Perotti talked about all the ways people give to the community, from fire and ambulance volunteers to those who worked on hurricane relief to those who serve on boards and commissions year in and year out.The Red Cross is hosting a series of Heroes Breakfast Celebrations around the state (although there are none planned for this area). It is looking for nominations for individuals who have performed an extraordinary act of courage or have given significant time to a special cause.
