Town honors the passing of Bob McGhee

NORTH EAST — Services were held for Robert “Bob McGhee Sr. on June 16 at the Valentine Funeral Home here, with a lengthy procession following that down Main Street to Irondale Cemetery, for the interment.

McGhee had retired earlier this year from the North East Highway Department, after 25 years.

“Over the years he did his all to get the job done for our town, said North East Supervisor Dave Sherman. “It’s very unfortunate to have someone pass at such a young age, and he will be missed.

“Bob had peace and knowledge, said Rev. Andrew Smith, who conducted the funeral service. “He was able to smile and be content.

One of McGhee’s favorite pastimes was operating heavy equipment. He was a member of the Webutuck FFA Agricultural Advisory Board, the Hudson Valley Old Time Power Association and a member of the “North East Pullers.

“Does anyone know how many tractors Bob actually owned? Smith asked the audience. It was best estimated at 27.

McGhee was also an honorary member of the Millerton Fire Department.

“He’s why I am where I am in the  Millerton Fire Department,â€ said Lenny Morrison. “Bobby signed my application. We had a lot of good times, and we’re gonna miss him.â€

Following the funeral, a procession of fire trucks and the highway department’s grater, McGhee’s vehicle of choice, made its way down Main Street, where a giant American Flag was hung in the streets in his honor.

“Bobby was probably one of the greatest guys in North East,â€ said Mary Underhill, a family friend from Dave’s TV, where Bob’s son, Robert McGhee Jr. has worked for the last 13 years, since the age of 14. “Bob’s family deserved what the town gave him [on Tuesday]. I think he was one of the  greatest workers the town has had, and a very well-liked man.â€

In addition to Robert Jr., Bob is survived by a second son, Jake McGhee-Miller, who is 2, his girlfriend, Brenda Miller, two brothers, David and Gaynor McGhee, and a sister, Susan McGhee.

Memorial donations in Bob’s name may be sent to the Millerton Fire Department, the Irondale Cemetery Association, which McGhee was a member of, or the Hudson Valley Old Time Power Association.
