Town meeting results in committees

CORNWALL — As annual town meetings in Cornwall go, it was a relatively subdued affair Oct. 22, with about 20 people coming together in the Cornwall Consolidated School gathering room.

There was a modicum of discussion on the resurrection of a conservation commission and a committee on the aging. Reaction indicated a consensus for First Selectman Gordon Ridgway’s suggestion that the latter be given a better name. Both were town committees years ago, that quietly died out; town residents hope to revive them.

An economic study group, a possible forerunner to an economic development commission, is also being formed.

There were no objections to any of these plans. In fact, the only concerns expressed were that these groups be formed as soon as possible.

Approved unanimously at the meeting was a five-year capital spending plan. The plan takes a long-range look at major future expenditures, such as road maintenance, replacement of town and fire department vehicles, town building maintenance and an annual amount set aside for projects at the school building.

The next revaluation, according to the five-year update schedule, will be next year.
