Federal Industries in Canaan is closing its manufacturing operation, according to Harleigh Tingley, an officer of the pre-fab housing firm. “We will continue to erect houses prefabricated elsewhere, but the disastrous fire last winter has made it impossible to operate economically with the facilities now available,” Mr. Tingley said.

The meadow of a little more than five acres which fronts on Porter Street in Lakeville has been sold by Ann Hoskins to the U.P. Development Corp. of Lindhurst, Long Island. The new owner plans to build a group of garden apartments on the property. The property was originally purchased as a site for a Lakeville Journal building when the Journal grew too big for its old location on Main Street just west of the Holley Block. Instead, the paper moved to its present home in the Holley Manufacturing Company building (circa 1866) owned by Frederick Leubuscher. The original Porter Street property was approximately eight acres. A piece at the upper end was sold to Dr. Robert Noble to complete his ownership of the old Porter Ore Mine pond; a second parcel was purchased by the Lakeville Methodist Church to square off its rear lot; a third strip was deeded to the Town of Salisbury to facilitate the widening of Porter Street.

SHARON — The Sewer and Water Commission continues to make progress on plans for the new town water filtration system. The commission has received good results on the last series of pilot tests of the town reservoir’s water, and the next series of tests is scheduled for late February and early March. The town plans to appraise a parcel of land on Calkinstown Road within the next six weeks, as the topography of the Calkinstown site best suits the requirements of the proposed filtration plant.
