100 years ago — February 1907

SHARON — Mr. F.I. Peabody is wiring his shop for electric lights.

 

The Observer (editorial): Can anyone explain why is it that a big husky man will bundle up in his heaviest clothing when he goes out into the cold, while a little frail slip of a woman will go out and hang up a washing with her sleeves rolled up and nothing but thin clothing. We suppose this is one of the everlasting mysteries that will never be solved.

 

CHAPINVILLE — Fourteen inch ice is being harvested.

50 years ago — February 1957

SALISBURY — The Grand List for the town shows an increase of $532,348, according to figures released by the Board of Assessors. The town has grown in all departments except "cattle" with 2,063 listed or 31 fewer than in 1955. Although there are fewer cows (or bulls), there are more horses; 26 more, to be exact, which raises the Town’s equine assets by $2,200.

 

LIME ROCK — Miss Fritzie Mills arrived home on Tuesday from Wellesley College for her mid-term holiday.

 

SALISBURY — Susan Wheeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wheeler, celebrated her fifth birthday last Saturday with a party for several of her friends.

25 years ago — February 1982

TACONIC — Henry and Margaret Lesmeister and their son Michael lost everything last Friday when a fire destroyed their Preston Road home — everything that is, except their most precious possession, their lives.

 

FALLS VILLAGE — Official census figures on file with the town clerk show this town to be a middle-aged, middle-class community comprised largely of small family groups.

Linda Kaplan

MILLERTON — Linda Kaplan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, cousin and friend, passed away Sept. 3, 2024. Linda will be remembered as a deeply kind woman guided by faith, family and love.

Linda was born to Francis Crawford and Lydia Johnson (nee Snyder) in Sharon, on Sept. 14, 1942. She attended Webutuck High School in Millerton, and then started her career in banking, where she worked until her retirement as a Vice President. Linda was a loving mother who raised her two sons and instilled in them her love of faith and family.

Cornwall Studio Tour captures rural arts scene

The Cornwall Open Studio took place on Saturday, Aug. 31. It is a Cornwall tradition and has been taking place for eighteen years.

It is a day when Cornwall artists invite the public into their studios to see what they are working on and how they do it. The artists work in various media, including painting, sculpture, photography and artistic shoes.

Pastries by Hanna was established in February of 2024 at 27 Railroad St. in North Canaan. The owner, Hanna Rybolt, is a resident of Canaan who studied in the pastry program at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island.
