100 years ago — June 1916

SALISBURY — The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dunston is in the Winsted hospital to be treated for blood poisoning in one of its arms.

 

SHARON — The commencement exercises of the Sharon High School will be held this week Thursday. A class of seven pupils will graduate.

 

According to the current issue of the Telephone Bulletin there are 1,488 telephones in Winsted, 1,877 in Torrington, 433 in Canaan, 378 in Lakeville and 301 in Norfolk.

 

A large swarm of bees settled on one of the trees near the hose house on Wednesday noon. Herbert Beebe, who keeps bees, covered himself with netting and soon hived the swarm, getting stung only once.

 

CHAPINVILLE — Mr. and Mrs. Allan Treat, formerly of Hamlet Hill Farm, have moved into Horace Kelsey’s house.

 

50 years ago — June 1966

CORNWALL — Elizabeth Townsend Rogers McConaughy, 78, widow of Governor James Lukens McConaughy, died at her home on Valley Road on Monday night. She had suffered a stroke last September and had been in ill health since. Mrs. McConaughy, who loved animals and won their confidence, fed as many as 15 raccoons on her terrace during the summer of 1965, often inviting neighbors in to enjoy with her the antics of the visiting animals.

 

SALISBURY — Mrs. Elsie Bird of Torrington spent the week end with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Patchen.

 

FALLS VILLAGE — Returning recently from tours abroad are Miss Adelaide Clark, Main Street, and Mrs. Roy Gerken, Cobble Road. Although on independent tours, the women met in London and visited the cathedral towns, places and great houses together, enjoying especially the English gardens at that time of the year.

 

CANAAN — Larry C. Walrath, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Walrath, graduated from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, receiving his B.A. degree. Majoring in mathematics and psychology, he participated in the college band and bass ensemble.

 

25 years ago — June 1991

CANAAN — Martha Platt of Salisbury is the featured artist this month at the Canaan National Bank.

 

NORFOLK — Barbara Boutot has opened a new business featuring handcrafted and personally designed clothing and home furnishings.

Alfred Lyon Ivry

SALISBURY — Alfred Lyon Ivry, a long-time resident of Salisbury, and son of Belle (Malamud) and Morris Ivry, died in Bergen County, New Jersey, on Feb. 12 at the age of 91, surrounded by family members. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he was a graduate ofAbraham Lincoln High School and Brooklyn College, where he earned a B.A. in English literature and Philosophy and served as drama critic for the school paper.

Alfred earned a PhD in Medieval Jewish Philosophy from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1963 and in 1971 was awarded a D. Phil in Medieval Islamic Philosophy from Oxford University, Linacre College.

Alice Gustafson

LAKEVILLE — Alice Gustafson (née Luchs), 106, of Lakeville, Connecticut, passed away on March 2, 2026. Born in Chicago on Dec. 15, 1919, Alice was raised between New York City, Florida and Lime Rock, where she graduated from Salisbury High School in 1937.

Alice’s career spanned roles at Conover-Mast Publications in New York City, The Lakeville Journal, the Interlaken Inn, and as a secretary to the past president of Smith College. In 1948, she married Herbert “Captain Gus” Gustafson at Trinity Church in Lime Rock.

KENT — Carol L. Hoffman Matzke passed away peacefully with family by her side on Feb. 22, 2026.

She was a beloved mother and stepmother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, community member, and friend.Her presence will be deeply missed. She had a beautiful way of loving, accepting, and supporting all the many members of her vast family, and of welcoming others into her family circle. She was intelligent and well-informed about history and current events, and she took a genuine interest in knowing and understanding everyone she met, from friends and family right down to the stranger who stood next to her in line at the grocery store. Kind and generous, her family and friends knew that she would do anything in her power to help and support them.

Cornwall signs contract for new fire trucks

CORNWALL — Cornwall Volunteer Fire Department and the Board of Selectmen signed the contract for two new fire trucks Tuesday, March 3.

The custom rescue pumper and mini pumper will be manufactured by Greenwood Emergency Vehicles, located in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
