Webutuck atheletes honored at well-attended annual banquet

WEBUTUCK — The Eugene Brooks Middle School gymnasium was full of parents and students last Wednesday night for Webutuck’s annual sports awards banquet.

Dinner was served buffet-style before the ceremony began, and fall sports coaches were seated at the front in preparation for the award handouts.

“This is the best turnout I’ve seen in a few years, Athletic Director Mike Riddle announced, thanking the Booster Club, the coaches, the Bradys for preparing the dinner, the maintenance crew (“Our fields are second to none), the teachers, and the transportation department, as well as the parents of the players. Approximately 350 people attended the event, setting a Webutuck athletic awards attendance record.

Riddle also pointed out the balance between athletics and academics the school has managed to achieve. Between the varsity and junior varsity teams, 56 out of 103 players made the honor roll this year; 31 of the 48 students that made the high honor roll were in athletics as well.

From a purely athletic perspective, this is the first time in Webutuck soccer history that a member of the boys and girls programs made First Team All-League in the same season. The volleyball team also made the regional finals for the first time in 11 years.

Each coach had the opportunity to give a summary of their team’s season, as well as to award their key players for their outstanding efforts on and off the fields.

The following is the list of the major awards given out at the 2008 fall sports awards on Wednesday, Nov. 12 (varsity sports only).
