Wrestlers take second place at tourney

The Housatonic wrestling team defeated four out of five teams at the Somers Duals Tournament, giving the Mountaineers a second-place finish on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Housy lost to Somers, 36-31, and beat Windham Tech, 54-21,  New London, 43-35, Lyman Memorial, 48-27, and Classical, 45-27.

Kevin Arel (103 pounds) won by forfeit against Somers, Windham Tech and New London and Classical. He pinned David Johnston of Lyman in 26 seconds.

Nameer Abou-Hamze (112 pounds) won by forfeit against Somers and New London. At 119 pounds, he won by forfeit against Windham Tech and Lyman and was pinned by Jimmy Renstrom of Classical.

Jarred Foley (119 pounds) was pinned by Dan Piscattano of Somers in 7 seconds and by Chaz Doyle of New London in 1:08 minutes. At 112 pounds, he won by forfeit against Windham Tech. Lyman and Classical.

Dominic Ghi (125 pounds) pinned Joe Baily of Somers in 40 seconds, Carlos Guzman of New London in 18 seconds, and Kemoy McEachron of Classical in 3:29 minutes. He lost a decision to Jake Alderman of Lyman, 8-4. At 130 pounds, he won by forfeit against Windham Tech.

Kevin Paz-Leal (130 pounds) was pinned by Kevin McGowan of Somers in 3:14 minutes and by Campbell Thornton of Lyman in 4:25 minutes. He won a decision against Tamita Sandaval of New London, 13-0. He pinned Jacob Cachol of Classical in 4:22 minutes.

Will Schutt (135 pounds) won by forfeit against Somers and Lyman. He was pinned by Spencher Shirshac of Windham Tech in 1:44 minutes and  by Kenny Jules of Classical in 45 seconds. He won by disqualification against Trevor Bland of New London.

Steven Wingard (152 pounds) lost a decision to Robert Garlick of Somers, 10-3. At 145 pounds, he pinned Tyler Oliver of Windham Tech in 2:59 minutes, Alfred Meikel of Lyman in 1:28 minutes and Frank Celadita of Classical in 36 seconds, and won by forfeit against New London.

Captain Sam Schwartz (160 pounds) won a decision against Matt Hoff of Somers, 14-0, against Trevon McBrown of New London, 11-0, and against Michael Zambala of Classical in overtime, 3-2. He pinned Stephen Hall of Windham Tech in 53 seconds and Sean Mulcahy of Lyman in 41 seconds.

Captain Braiiiiiiiiiijdley Visconti (171 pounds) lost a decision against Tim Vallaro of Somers, 9-7. He pinned Ben Wells of Winham Tech in 2:56 minutes. He won on a technical fall against Stephan Dance of New London, 18-2. He won by forfeit against Classical.

Ben Schwartz (189 pounds) won a decision against Wick Bartarache of Somers, 5-4. He lost a decision against Adam Hardegen of Windham Tech, 11-6.

Roger Newkirk (189 pounds) was pinned by Erik Snodgrass of New London in 2:57 minutes and by Josh Kneeland of Lyman in 16 seconds. He lost a decision against Daniella Lopez of Classical, 6-5.

Ed Bailey (215 pounds) was pinned by Ken Vollaro of Somers in 1:11 minutes and by Gregorio Prichardo of New London in 1:06 minutes. He pinned Luis Miranda of Windham Tech in 3:29 minutes and Connor Michael of Lyman in 1:33 minutes. He won by forfeit against Classical.

Cody Morrison (285 pounds) was pinned by Nick Niaolov of Somers in 11 seconds, by Mark Williams of Windham Tech in 1:42 minutes, by Osvaldo Rosario of New London in 38 seconds, by Joe O’Keefe of Lyman in 1:11 minutes and by Brandon Kumm of Classical in 21 seconds.

Housatonic forfeited matches at 140 pounds and 152 pounds.

The Mountaineers were scheduled to compete against Terryville Wednesday, Jan. 14. They head for the Griswold Tournament Saturday, Jan. 17.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

Students dressed in neon lined the soccer field for senior night under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 16. The game against Lakeview was the last in a series of competitions Thursday night in celebration of Homecoming 2025.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The poster promoting the Homecoming dance boasted the event would feature dancing, games and a bonfire. Reactions to the planned move outside were mixed, with some students excited about the changes and others expressing a desire for tradition.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.

Housy takes on Halloween

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
