2009 Superintendent Award winners - Takhia Brown and Matthew Orrell

Region One schools this week announced the names of students who have earned the annual Superintendent Awards.

NORTH CANAAN — Takhia Brown is confident and sweet, with a ready smile. Her performing talents, terrific academic achievements, volunteer work and overall great attitude are just some of the reasons she has been named a Superintendent  Award winner for North Canaan Elementary School.

Takhia’s favorite school subject is English, and she’d like to teach middle school English when she grows up.

She also won the North Canaan Elementary School citizenship award, is a Girl Scout, enjoys many outdoor activities (especially bicycling) and volunteers at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

As for her notable singing and acting talent, will that be a part of her future?

“I don’t know,� she said modestly, “I plan to continue with music and drama in high school, so we’ll see.�

Matthew Orrell finds time for lots of sports, school clubs and Boy Scout activities, yet still makes the high honor roll.  In adddition to being given the Superintendent Award, Matthew is also a recipient of the school’s citizenship award.

History is Matthew’s favorite subject. Maybe he’ll make history of his own some day, possibly by breaking records on the baseball diamond. Baseball is his greatest passion, by far. He intends to play professional baseball and find an enduring career in the sport.

“Maybe I’ll work on being a gym teacher,� he said.

His favorite team?

“The Red Sox.�

Who was he rooting for in the playoffs?

“The Angels.� Of course.
