4-H Fair begins show season

NORTH CANAAN — The Jack Brown 4-H Fair is one of the town’s enduring traditions. After decades and generations of involvement, the move from the usual Sunday to a Saturday this past weekend really threw folks off, so attendance was lower than normal. But kids proudly showing off their cows, or goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks or dogs remains a joy that never changes.Which isn’t to say that it didn’t get just a bit tense in a shady corner of the field next to the North Canaan Congregational Church, where it was all about the details of top lines and well-brushed tails and keeping those white shirts and pants perfectly clean.Family members lounged nearby, enjoying the cookout and the famous jet milkshakes. This was the first competition of the agricultural show season. It was a chance for 4-H members to hone their skills for this coming weekend’s Litchfield County 4-H Fair at the Goshen Fairgrounds, where the competition will be a bit tougher.

Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
