America through the eyes of Chinese students

SHARON — About a month ago Region One School District Assistant Superintendent Lisa Carter received a somewhat panicky email from a colleague in China.

A planned trip for 16 Chinese students to stay for a month in Wethersfield, Conn., fell through when not enough families signed up to host the children.

Carter swung into action and found families in Region One who were willing to step up on short notice.

Four of the students came to Sharon Center School on Tuesday, June 4, for an interview.

The students, all girls, all aged 10 or 11 and all from Beijing, spoke good English; occasionally Carter, who speaks Mandarin, helped out.

Xi Ronghuan, aka Sunny, age 10, stayed with the Petkov family in Sharon.

She said the Sharon school building is nicer than her school back home. She also commented on the superiority of American swing sets and the abundance of jelly beans.

Bai Yunhan, age 11, went by Linda for her stay with the LaFonde family in Sharon.

She said when she was not in school, she and the LaFonde sisters played Uno and basketball.

Mo Fanyi (Lisa), age 11, stayed with the Vega family in Salisbury. She noted that in China, schools provide small percussion instruments for music classes, and was surprised to find the full complement of instruments at Salisbury Central School.

And Qiao Wenyi (Wendy), age 11, said she liked hamburgers and french fries, but was unimpressed by the vegetables. She stayed with the Faveau family in Salisbury.

(Further questioning revealed that Wendy’s disdain for vegetables predates her arrival in the United States.)

The 16 Chinese students participated in potluck suppers and kickball games, and visited a batting cage. They went to the agricultural education open house at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, and visited Boston on Memorial Day weekend.

They returned to China on Saturday, June 8.
