Annual memorial race to be held at Lions Club Pavilion

The 5th Annual Erin Shanley Memorial 5K Race will be held at the Lions Club Pavilion on Saturday, Aug. 16.All proceeds from the event will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Tennessee.Erin Shanley was a Stanfordville resident and Stissing Mountain High School scholar and athlete when she died in an automobile accident in 2004.For several years, Erin would donate to St. Jude through a WRWD 107.3 radio program, according to family friend and Event Coordinator Tim Reynolds.“After Erin passed away in 2004, I began raising money in her memory as part of the WRWD radio fund,” he said, in order to carry on his schoolmate’s tradition.Eventually, Reynolds and Erin’s mother, Valerie Shanley, were given their own airtime during the broadcast to garner additional support. In 2010, Reynolds introduced the 5K Memorial Race to further the community’s involvement in the memorial efforts. For the second consecutive year, the race will be followed by a pancake breakfast, also at the pavilion, where runners can join other members of the community. This year marks the first race with a corporate sponsor: Millbrook Physical Therapy. The company will be on site providing information about injury prevention before and after the race.“The Shanley family has contributed a lot to our local community and it’s great to see all the people from the Pine Plains and Stanford communities join together to help raise money for a common purpose and to help the kids at St. Jude,” Reynolds said. “Trying to find a cure for cancer is a great way to keep Erin’s memory alive and in our hearts.”Reynolds added that families with children at St. Jude do not pay any money toward their children’s care and said it’s important to keep the research hospital funded so it may continue to run accordingly. So far the Erin Shanley Memorial Fund has raised about $170,000 for cancer research at St. Jude. Participants can register on location before the race at 8:15 a.m. The race starts at 9 a.m.Registration for the 5K is $10; there is a $5 fee for the one-mile race and a $5 charge for the pancake breakfast. For more information, contact Reynolds at 845-214-7801 or t.reynolds1026@gmail.com.

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
