Arnoff Moving & Storage celebrates 90 years

Arnoff Moving & Storage, a family-owned and operated business that has roots in Millerton and nearby Lakeville, Conn., as well as headquarters in Poughkeepsie, is celebrating its 90th year in business throughout 2014. The company held a recent ribbon cutting at its Poughkeepsie office, with fifth-generation family members Nicholas Arnoff, warehouse fleet manager; Craig Arnoff, CPA and branch accountant; and Dan Arnoff, business development manager. The event was sponsored by the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and attended by roughly 100 members of the surrounding community.The nearly century-old business was founded in 1924 by Russian immigrants Abraham Arnoff and his son, Louis. Today is employs more than 160 people and has six warehouse locations in New York, Connecticut and Florida, with a fleet boasting more than 200 company-owned trucks, trailers and flatbeds. Included in that are specialized “high-cube climate-controlled trailers.” Arnoff’s also offers mini warehouses in New York and Connecticut and portable self-storage throughout the Hudson Valley.“I have seen many transformations in our business and have enjoyed the success that Arnoff Moving & Storage has accomplished,” said Richard Arnoff, chairman of Arnoff Moving & Storage. “I am proud of what our family has accomplished,” echoed Michael Arnoff, president of Arnoff Moving & Storage. “Our industry has changed a lot over the years and we have been able to meet those challenges head-on. Part harvest festival, part community reunion, the gathering is a reflection of the region’s rich agricultural and cultural ecosystem.

It takes a lot of courage to share your art for the first time and Marilyn Hock is taking that leap with her debut exhibition at Sharon Town Hall on Sept. 12. A realist painter with a deep love for wildlife, florals, and landscapes, Hock has spent the past few years immersed in watercolor, teaching herself, failing forward, and returning again and again to the page. This 18-piece collection is a testament to courage, practice and a genuine love for the craft.

“I always start with the eyes,” said Hock of her animal portraits. “That’s where the soul lives.” This attentiveness runs through her work, each piece rendered with care, clarity, and a respect for the subtle variations of color and light in the natural world.
