Assault call leads to criminal sex charge

MILLERTON — The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of two local men last weekend after deputies followed up on a 911 call for an assault.

Brett Sherman, 18, and Cory Hotaling, 21, were arrested at approximately 8 a.m. last Saturday, June 5. Sheriff’s deputies had responded to a 911 call for an assault at 54 Main St. in the village.

Police said they arrived to find two subjects who were apparently injured but uncooperative, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

The investigation led deputies to another location on Main Street, where damaged property and marijuana was found. At this location, deputies discovered that Hotaling had reportedly made sexual contact with a 15-year-old female in the apartment, according to the press release.

Hotaling was charged with a criminal sexual act in the third degree, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. He was arraigned at North East Court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

Sherman was charged with unlawfully growing cannabis and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, both misdemeanors, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. He was arraigned at North East Court and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $1,500 cash bail or $3,000 bond.

Both men were scheduled to reappear in court on June 8, after this paper’s deadline. The press release issued from the sheriff’s office stated that no charges had been filed in connection with the original report of assault.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
