Bargains, surprises at music swap

NORTH CANAAN — From a guitar signed by members of the rock group Smash Mouth to an antique accordion used to entertain troops in World War II, the offerings at a musicians swap and flea market at Lawrence Field on Saturday, Aug. 29, were certainly unusual.

One can also find at the flea market (held under the pavilion twice a year) affordable instruments and equipment. Vendors are typically people with a passion for music, an independent business and a collection they need to cull to make room for their next find.

Mike Truden came down from Pittsfield, Mass., with his guitar collection, including the one autographed by Smash Mouth, which he bought at a tag sale in New York state. Not an exciting story, but a great find for the next fan.

“I don’t have a company, just a disease,” Truden said. “I can’t help buying guitars, and I’m running out of room.”

He laughed when asked if his wife is demanding more space in the basement or spare room.

“No, she’s very understanding,” he said. “Probably because I keep everything at my mom’s.”

Roy Edella, of Roy’s Used Instruments in Torrington, brought guitars and a lightly used drum set. He said he has been coming to the bi-annual swap since it began four years ago.

“It’s a great way to make connections,” he said. “People call me when their kid needs an instrument for school, or if they just want to, say, try a guitar without making a big investment.”

Indeed, as vendors were still arriving and setting up that morning, they were checking out the goodies at other tables and sharing stories of their latest finds.

The swap is held every year in June and August. It is organized by local musicians Kevin Godburn and Sean Claydon, who promised a community-based musical venture is coming soon to the town center.

KENT– A year-and-a-half-long legal dispute over an unpermitted roadway and dock built through wetlands on North Spectacle Pond is approaching a resolution. The KenMont and KenWood summer camp and the town’s Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Commission are close to reaching a mutually acceptable agreement.

The conflict began after the IWWC denied the camp’s retroactive application in March 2024 for the road and dock, which were constructed without town approval sometime last decade. The Commission found both structures violated town regulations, leading the camp to file a legal appeal.
