Birth, Death, and Alphabets: The Enduring Legacy of Schoolgirl Needleworks Before 1850

Birth, Death, and Alphabets: The Enduring Legacy of Schoolgirl Needleworks Before 1850

The Salisbury Association Historical Society will host an exhibit of samplers at the Academy Building from Feb. 15 until April 30. Remarkable for their inventiveness and beauty, needlework samplers are historical documents written by girls on silk and linen with needles. The exhibit is curated by Alexandra Peters and presents some of the samplers in her 150 piece collection. They were stitched by girls, mostly aged 5 to 16, between 1689 and 1850.

Please join us for a reception at the Academy Building Feb. 15: 4 to 6 p.m.

In addition, Alexandra will give a talk on Feb. 22, 4 to 5 p.m., at the Scoville Memorial Library. The talk will discuss how needleworks made before 1850 show us life before the Industrial Revolution from the often surprising perspective of young women.

Registration is required for the talk. scovillelibrary.org

SALISBURY — The Twin Lakes Association is taking an earlier and more aggressive approach to fighting the spread of invasive hydrilla in East Twin Lake by dosing the whole northeast bay, from May through October, with low-level herbicide treatments instead of spot treatments.

The goal, said Russ Conklin, the TLA’s vice president of lake management, is to sustain herbicide concentration over the 2025 growing season.
