Business Association to clean up town

PINE PLAINS — “The Business Association is back!

So said Ibis Guzman, who explained that the local association has been working to get the group more involved in the community.

“We’ve had several meetings now, which have been very positive, he said. “We seem to get more and more new members. I think people are talking about it, and it’s got really good support.

Currently the only big event the Business Association puts on is the annual Parade of Lights in the winter.

“We’re trying to do a little more to help the community, and instill a little more civic pride in the residents, Guzman explained.

One of the ways the association is helping is by hosting a cleanup day this Saturday, April 25. Volunteers can meet at 3 p.m. at the park in the center of town.

“We’re trying to clean up the little things, maybe the trash on the side of the road. And we’re encouraging the community to go out into their own yards, Guzman said. “We want to make this place seem special.

There will be a limited supply of trash-grabbers, but anyone is invited to come, Guzman said. There will be police escorts to ensure drivers are slowing down, and signs announcing the cleanup.

The Business Association usually meets the third Tuesday of the month. However, there will be a special meeting tonight, Thursday, April 23, to get ready for the cleanup day. Interested residents may show up at the back of the Stissing National Bank at 7 p.m.; the meeting will be held inside. For more information, call 518-398-5500.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
