Charlotte Newton

KENT — Charlotte Newton, 96, of South Kent, passed away on April 16, 2011, at the Kent Health Facility. She was the wife of William H. Newton. Mrs. Newton was born Sept. 24, 1914, in Danbury, daughter of the late Clara (Beyer) and Eric Hagman. She was a graduate of Kent Center School, Connecticut State College and the University of Connecticut, where she excelled in basketball and field hockey. She was the first homemaking teacher in the former Washington High School. She also taught in Seymour, Suffield and Wethersfield high schools. She became a certified elementary schoolteacher at the former Danbury State College. After teaching homebound students, she became a full-time schoolteacher at Kent Center School, teaching first through fourth grades. She retired in 1979 after 40 years of teaching. Mrs. Newton was active in the First Congregational Church of Kent as a Sunday school teacher, a church deacon for several years and a junior choir organist. She was also a member of the Grange for more than 70 years. In addition to her husband of 68 years, she is survived by a daughter, Carol McCann, and her husband, Frank of Kent; three grandchildren, Kathy McCann, Ane Starr and her husband, Mathew, and Bill McCann; and four great-grandchildren, Katherine, Sammy, Rigby and Will. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the care of the Lillis Funeral Home in New Milford.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 97 North Main St., Kent, CT 06757.

SALISBURY — About 30 people turned out for the traditional Veterans Day ceremony at Salisbury Town Hall on a cold and snowy Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Chris Ohmen handled the colors and Chris Williams ran the ceremony.

North Canaan gives gratitude to veterans

NORTH CANAAN — Students at North Canaan Elementary School saluted servicemen and servicewomen at a Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Eighteen veterans were honored, many of whom attended the ceremony and were connected to the school as relatives of students or staff.

When longtime arts administrator Amy Wynn became the first executive director of the American Mural Project (AMP) in 2018, the nonprofit was part visionary art endeavor, part construction site and part experiment in collaboration.

Today, AMP stands as a fully realized arts destination, home to the world’s largest indoor collaborative artwork and a thriving hub for community engagement. Wynn’s departure, marked by her final day Oct. 31, closes a significant chapter in the organization’s evolution. Staff and supporters gathered the afternoon before to celebrate her tenure with stories, laughter and warm tributes.
