Charlotte's celebrates third year

MILLBROOK — Alicia and her husband, Mikael Möller, are excited: Charlotte’s, the restaurant and catering business they own, is celebrating its third year in business.

Starting a restaurant is tough, but Alicia believes the secret to running a successful food business is simple.

“You treat the staff well and you serve good food,� she said. “Try to make the people feel comfortable when they come in and eat.�

As many failed eateries know, it’s easier said than done. But having a scenic location like the area around Charlotte’s sure doesn’t hurt.

Many find the area so beautiful that weddings are held at the restaurant, and Alicia said she’s seen her fair share of proposals in the main dining area. They also rent a large banquet hall to members of the community. Millbrook Hunting, the Dutchess County Historical Society and the Wassaic Fire Company have all held events there.

The Möllers reside upstairs in the spacious building. Mikael is the executive chef of the restaurant, and with such a close-knit relationship between the family and the food, the Möllers believe they offer a truly unique dining experience.

“In the winter we have fires going all the time,� Alicia said. “In the summer we have a garden where we seat people and an outdoor wood-burning grill. But it’s the great food that people come back for.�

Mikael, a Swedish chef, is passionate about cooking, to say the least.

“This is not a job, it’s an adventure,� he said. “You’re working with feelings. It’s a very romantic kitchen.�

Mikael was adamant that cooking is not something that can be taught in school, but something that must be experienced. He said he has turned many inexperienced cooks into chefs who eventually open their own restaurants, and he is proud of his apprenticeships.

Charlotte’s serves a variety of European-American foods with a regularly changing menu, “so that people who come back have a new experience,� said Alicia. Many of the foods trace back to Mikael’s Swedish origins, including gravlax, which is raw salmon usually cured in salt, sugar and dill and served with a dill and mustard sauce. Due to its popularity, gravlax is one of the staples of Charlotte’s menu.

Friday, April 3, marked the conclusion of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. Customers at Charlotte’s were able to enjoy a three-course meal for $26. One of the items on the menu for Charlotte’s is osso bucco alle verdure, which is a veal shank braised with vegetables, red wine and veal stock. The dish is famous for the delicacy of the bone marrow it offers.

“We’d like to thank our patrons and our purveyors,� Alicia said about celebrating three years in business. “We have some wonderful regulars who have become part of our community.�

Charlotte’s is located at 4258 Route 44, on the outskirts of Millbrook. The restaurant is now into its spring and summer menu. Its hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Reservations are recommended; call 845-677-5888.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

Art scholarship now honors HVRHS teacher Warren Prindle

Legendary American artist Jasper Johns, perhaps best known for his encaustic depictions of the U.S. flag, formed the Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 1963, operating the volunteer-run foundation in his New York City artist studio with the help of his co-founder, the late American composer and music theorist John Cage. Although Johns stepped down from his chair position in 2015, today the Foundation for Community Arts continues its pledge to sponsor emerging artists, with one of its exemplary honors being an $80 thousand dollar scholarship given to a graduating senior from Housatonic Valley Regional High School who is continuing his or her visual arts education on a college level. The award, first established in 2004, is distributed in annual amounts of $20,000 for four years of university education.

In 2024, the Contemporary Visual Arts Scholarship was renamed the Warren Prindle Arts Scholarship. A longtime art educator and mentor to young artists at HVRHS, Prindle announced that he will be retiring from teaching at the end of the 2023-24 school year. Recently in 2022, Prindle helped establish the school’s new Kearcher-Monsell Gallery in the library and recruited a team of student interns to help curate and exhibit shows of both student and community-based professional artists. One of Kearcher-Monsell’s early exhibitions featured the work of Theda Galvin, who was later announced as the 2023 winner of the foundation’s $80,000 scholarship. Prindle has also championed the continuation of the annual Blue and Gold juried student art show, which invites the public to both view and purchase student work in multiple mediums, including painting, photography, and sculpture.
