Cornwall girls are Region One champs

CORNWALL — The Cornwall Consolidated School girls’ — undefeated! — basketball team claimed this year’s championship trophy Feb. 4, defeating Kent Center School 30 to 24.

It was an exciting game played in the Housatonic Valley Regional High School gym before fans from around the region.

As regular season play wound down, the Cornwall girls, many of whom had also played in last year’s tournament game, were certain they would play Salisbury Central again. They lost last year but were looking forward to a win they would not be denied on a second chance.

But Kent beat Salisbury in a surprise upset as tournament elimination play opened earlier in the week.

It resulted in a face-off between two well-matched teams, in terms of size and skill. They launched a hard-fought battle, with scoring minimized by an impressive defense on both sides. More than a few points were scored on break-away lay-ups and outside shots.

Cornwall managed a slim lead, 11 to 8, at halftime. The team managed to open it up during the second half. Kent rallied during the final minutes to lessen the gap, but it was just not enough.

It was quite a thrill for Cornwall Principal Bob Vaughan who, as the new regional athletic coordinator, had the honor of presenting the trophy to the victorious team. He was obviously very happy to preface that presentation with, “Winning their 11th game, with no losses …

It has been quite a ride for coaches Bonnie Burdick and Patricia Rovezzi, who have four (somewhat tentative) coaching years under their belt. They took on the challenge knowing that, because they are sisters, they would gain strength from each other. They found success in great part by connecting with the girls on various levels, knowing it’s often a matter of having the right mindset.

“We are so proud of them, Rovezzi said. “Every year we’ve had teams that are a mix of skill levels, from girls who have never played before to girls on travel teams. But all that matters is they work hard, and we have a good time.

As for coaching next year, Rovezzi would only say, “I’m just enjoying this right now.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
