Curling Club enjoys successful season after fire

NORFOLK — The Norfolk Curling Club has had a very busy new season, according to club president Mary Fanette. The club was shut for two seasons after its clubhouse was burned down by arsonists in December. 2011.After two years of planning and construction, the new clubhouse officially opened on Nov. 23.“The leagues started up soon after our grand opening in late November,” Fanette said. “Games are played every weeknight except for Thursday and Sunday afternoons. We have hosted two bonspiels this season.”Fanette said the club’s open house on Feb. 22 was well attended, with 150 attendees who tried curling for the first time.“Over 20 new curlers have joined the club since the open house and our membership, including social members, is now approximately 150 members,” Fanette said. “The club has been a part of our community for almost 60 years. The fact that we are thriving today is very important to the people of our town. It is because of their generous support and the support of the curling community that we have been able to rebuild.” She added the club is still raising funds in order to pay back loans from the rebuilding project.A canoe raffle drawing will be held in late May.For more information about the raffle and the club visit its website at www.rocknorfolk.com.
