Dempsey is top finisher in Sharon Classic race

SHARON — Runners from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts gathered on the town Green on Saturday, May 3, for the 29th annual Sharon Classic Road Race.
 
Under blue skies, with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees, 166 runners and walkers competed in the 5-mile race/walk that traveled along the town’s scenic Main Street before follwing back roads that skirted open fields, finished up at the center of the Green.
 
Eamon Dempsey of Delmar, N.Y., was the first male finisher and first overall finisher, with a time of 27:48, a pace of 5:34 per mile. This was the fourth time Dempsey participated in the race. 
 
“It’s a good feeling to come out on top,” he said. “It’s a tough course, and I ended up a little slower than I wanted, but with the lead I didn’t see the need to push myself any harder.”
 
Sara Belles of Brookfield, Conn., was the top female finisher, with a time of 33:10, a 6:38 pace per mile.
 
The top male and female finisher each received a prize of $250.
 
Brandon LeClair of Goshen was the top teenage runner, finishing third overall with a time of 29:43, a pace of 5:57 per mile.
 
The youngest participant was 10-year-old Caitrin Bailey of Sharon, who finished with an overall time of 45:13, a 9:03 per mile pace.
 
The oldest participant was Edward Regner, 85, of Sharon, who walked the race with a time of 1:20:27.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
