DOVER PLAINS — The Greater Grace Community Church at 3511 Route 22 will be holding GriefShare group sessions starting Friday, Nov. 7.GriefShare is a grief support program and network of 12,000 churches worldwide, according to Greater Grace Community Church Pastor Gary Witt.Witt’s participation in GriefShare was initiated when one of his church members, Laura Jane, approached him following the death of her husband.“Last year after my husband died I was completely devastated,” she said. “I searched for any grieving group anywhere but found none.”When Jane sought out Witt, the pastor said he was at a loss to find her a group.“When Laura came to me and said, ‘Pastor, would you pray about it,’ I went to a home base in Baltimore, Md., the Greater Grace headquarters, where I have a friend who used to be my assistant pastor in Dover.”Witt explained that his friend had lost a daughter several years ago and suggested GriefShare.“We signed up in September and we’re definitely going forward with it,” Witt said. The program runs in cycles of 13 weeks with each week offering a different “self-contained” theme, allowing attendees to join in at any point in the cycle and cover missed sessions next time around.Themes include “Is This Normal?” “Challenges of Grief,” “Guilt and Anger” and “Complicating Factors.” All seminar topics can be found at www.griefshare.org.Sessions will be held at the church on Friday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.Pastor Witt said a typical session will open with journal entries from those wishing to share, a GriefShare DVD viewing based on the session’s theme and a discussion of that video.“Individuals who are grieving the death of a loved one, no matter what the cause of the loved one’s death or how recent or long ago the death occurred, are invited to register and attend this group of people who understand what they may be feeling or experiencing,” Witt said.To register or ask questions, call 845-373-7880 or email gary.ambit@yahoo.com.
