Duntz honored as Marine of the Year

NORTH CANAAN — Members of Northwest Marine Detachment 042 gathered at the Couch Pipa VFW center in North Canaan on Tuesday  night, Oct. 1, to surprise Russell Duntz by honoring him as the Marine of the Year.

Nick Gandolfo presented Duntz with a plaque and a ceremonial sword. Gandolfo was the detachment’s Marine of the Year two years ago. Last year’s Marine of the Year, Brian Richardson, has passed away so it was up to Gandolfo to do the honors on Tuesday.

Gregg Timms, who is Litchfield County Commandant for the Northwest Detachment, congratulated Duntz. He read from a prepared statement commending Duntz for “always giving 100% to his duties.

“While serving as chaplain, he acted solemnly, reaching out to all veterans within his detachment.

“Russell has given outstanding, dedicated service as the detachment commandant, giving of his time to perform at veterans’ wakes, funerals and ceremonies throughout Litchfield County.”

Kirk Harrington, commander of the VFW post in North Canaan, spoke even though, the Marines joked, he’s an Army guy.

He cited Duntz’s volunteer efforts, noting that he’s a great father, a great husband and a person who does what has to be done, for no pay.

Duntz’s wife, Cheryl, stood when comments were solicited from the audience and quipped that, “Behind every great Marine is a great wife!”

Duntz’s son, Christopher, was also in the audience for the ceremony.

Duntz served in the Marines from 1983 to 1989.
