Dust in the wind, security cameras are topics at BOS

SHARON — At the bi-monthly selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25, First Selectman Brent Colley gave an update on road work being completed around town and discussed with the board a recent security incident that occurred at the town garage.

Colley said that drainage work on Sharon Station Road had been nearly completed and offered an apology to residents in the area for both the length of time the road has been closed as well as the dust generated from the work. He explained that a lack of rain had caused an unusual amount of dust and that a tanker truck had been moved to the location to help saturate the road to minimize the issue.

The board then addressed a recent issue at the town garage regarding a pump being left on overnight. Colley explained that all road crew employees have keys for the pumps, so it was hard to determine who was responsible for leaving the pump on. He then said this incident was a good segue into continuing discussions on the need for security cameras to be installed at the garage.

Selectman Jessica Fowler asked if cameras were indeed needed or if something like a key card or pin pad locking system would be sufficient. Colley agreed the other two options were something the board could look into, but said that a camera system would allow for other issues to be addressed such as road crew employees returning to the garage “early.” The board members all agreed the issue should be discussed further at a future meeting.

Indigo girls: a collaboration in process and pigment
Artist Christy Gast

In Amenia this fall, three artists came together to experiment with an ancient process — extracting blue pigment from freshly harvested Japanese indigo. What began as a simple offer from a Massachusetts farmer to share her surplus crop became a collaborative exploration of chemistry, ecology and the art of making by hand.

“Collaboration is part of our DNA as people who work with textiles,” said Amenia-based artist Christy Gast as she welcomed me into her vast studio. “The whole history of every part of textile production has to do with cooperation and collaboration,” she continued.
