Dutchess County Long Rifles recognized for excellence

MILLERTON — The Dutchess County Long Rifles (DCLR), the premier 4-H shooting-sport program in Dutchess County, was recognized by the Federation of Dutchess County Fish and Game Clubs as the 2016 Sports Club of the Year at its annual dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28. 

The award was presented by Bill Conners on behalf of Federation President Paul Annetts to Dutchess County 4-H Program Coordinator Robert Jenks, who accepted it on behalf of the club members. 

Conners recognized the club for “teaching the importance of handling firearms and archery equipment responsibly and safely” to area youth. The club was also recognized by the federation as the fastest growing youth shooting program in the region. 

Additionally, New York State Senator Sue Serino (R-41), awarded the DCLR with a Certificate of Recognition for its “commitment to teaching the importance of handling shooting sports equipment responsibly and safely.” 

Last Dec. 5, the DCLR held its annual awards night and dinner at American Legion Post 178 in Millerton. Club members were recognized for their marksmanship achievements in the shooting disciplines of archery (recurve and compound), air rifle, rifle and pistol. 

Many awards were given out that night, including the Junior Top Scorer and Top Shot awards. The Junior Top Scorer award goes to the member who achieves the highest total junior score during the 4-H year. The 2016 award went to James Cerven. 

The Top Shot award goes to the member who achieves the highest total number of expert qualifications during the 4-H year. The 2016 award went to Emma Jenks. 

Several other awards were also given out that night. The awardees are as follows:

• Junior Archery (Compound): Grace Gilroy, Sharpshooter.

• Intermediate Archery (Compound): Elizabeth Gilroy, Sharpshooter.

• Senior Archery (Compound): Spencer Thomas, Expert.

• Junior Archery (Recurve): Katie Beichert, Marksman; Logan Cavey, Marksman; Amelia Fatigate, Marksman; Anthony Strollo, Marksman; Christopher Marra, Sharpshooter.

• Intermediate Archery (Recurve): Connor Cavey, Marksman; Matthew Secreto, Marksman; Tyce Lambert, Sharpshooter; Carly Grudell, Sharpshooter; James Cerven, Sharpshooter.

The Becton, Dickinson and Company facility in North Canaan remains closed as of Friday, May 16, due to hazmat response protocol.

Two employees who opened a suspicious package were hospitalized yesterday as a precaution. They have since been released.

Keith Raven Johnson

SHARON — Keith Raven Johnson, a long-time resident of Sharon, died on April 26, 2025, a month after his 90th birthday, at Geer Rehabilitation and Long -Term Care facility in Canaan.

He was born on March 21, 1935, in Ithaca, New York, the son of John Raven Johnson and Hope Anderson Johnson.
