Eleanor L. Brown

WINSTED — Eleanor L. Brown, 83, died April 4, 2009, at Hartford Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born March 14, 1926, in New Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Annie (Brown) and Frederic Brown. She lived most of her life in Winsted.

Prior to her retirement in 1986, she had worked for the state Board of Education and Services for the Blind for 36 years. Prior to that she had worked for the Gilbert Clock Co. for seven years. In 1992, she received the Raymond E. Baldwin Award from the state Board of Education and Services for the Blind for outstanding contribution to services for blind people in Connecticut. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as past matron five times and most recently grand representative to the Grand Chapter of the state of New York.

Her survivors include nieces Henrietta Schofield of New Jersey, Elizabeth Castonguay and Cathy Chase, both of New Hartford, Noreen Marchand of Winsted and Anne Lynd of Barkhamsted; nephews Jeffrey Brown of Canton, Gene Brown of Winsted, Gary Brown of Barkhamsted, Fred Brown of Storrs, Joseph Brown of Texas, Robert Brown of Torrington and Keith Brown of Simsbury; sisters-in-law Kathleen Brown of Torrington and Mary Brown of Canton; and many great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Yahne; brothers Howard Brown, Raymond Brown, Harold Brown and Everett Brown; and a longtime friend and companion, Blanche Brown.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 18, 10:30 a.m., from Maloney Funeral Home, Winsted, to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Pine Meadow, with the Rev. Salin Low officiating. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery in Winsted. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
