Electric outage shuts down Millerton

MILLERTON — A brief power outage shut down businesses on part of Main Street in the village Tuesday afternoon.

Stores including Grand Union, McDonald’s, the CVS pharmacy and the gas stations either closed or partially shut down due to the outage.

A Central Hudson worker blamed a cutout on top of an electrical pole near CVS.

Cumberland Farms store manager Maryann Belarge said she kept the store open during the outage.

“We are running on a backup generator, so our registers can run, Belarge said. “I don’t think it’s going to hurt business on a Tuesday in the pouring rain. We don’t have the gas pumps on, but we still have customers coming in for cigarettes, lottery tickets and beer.

At Trotta’s Liquors, a cashier made no comment because, she said, she was frustrated by the outage.

Riley’s Furniture owner Greg Riley stayed open to customers.

“We have three customers in here right now, but maybe they had nothing better to do than to shop here, Riley said. “We needed this weather, but we didn’t need this power outage.

Laura Vik, who works at CVS, said business was interrupted for several minutes after the electricity went off.

“It’s hurt business, Vik said. “But we’ll open back up as soon as the power comes back on.

Service returned in the afternoon, and the stores resumed regular business.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
