Fast times at the Cub Scout Pack 11 Pinewood Derby

KENT — With the racetrack at Lime Rock Park not yet open for the season, Kent’s Cub Scout Pack 11 stepped into the breach, offering race fans the annual Pinewood Derby.The races were held on March 17 at the First Congregational Church and were attended by a crowd of more than 50 people.For first-grade Tiger Scouts, Aiden Cherniske finished first with an average time of 2.457 seconds. The second-grade Wolves saw Brennan Wilkins finish first at 2.389. Third-grade Bear Cub Scout Coultrip Branson was the leader in his division at 2.573.Cub Scout John DiGiacomo, fourth-grade Webelos I, bested his rivals at 2.386. For Webelos II, fifth-grader Nathan Winter came in first at 2.551.Racers with the three fastest times of the day competed in a final runoff race. In that event, first place went to Wolf Cub Scout Finn Bournival at 2.388.The Cub Scouts were assisted in the competition by members of Boy Scout Troop 11. All participants in the Pinewood Derby earned a trophy for their efforts.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
