Festive fun for everyone on Saturday

MILLERTON — Several holiday events will be held this Saturday to usher in the holiday spirit.

The First Presbyterian Church at 58 Main St. will hold its Light of the World Christmas Cantata at 3 p.m.

The event is a benefit for Carroll "Woody" Woodward, who is facing huge medical bills due to medical problems. Woodward was a cook at The Round Tuit restaurant for seven years and does not have medical insurance. He is also facing further surgery.

The benefit will be a musical program about the holiday season and donations will be accepted at the door.

At 6 p.m. on Main Street, the third annual Parade of Lights, featuring floats from local fire departments and organizations, will be held.

Millerton fire chief Keith Roger said that the holiday season is important for bringing people together.

"The parade helps to get everyone in that mood," Roger said. "It has really taken off the past few years, and it’s gotten a lot of people out for the community."

After the parade, residents are invited back to the firehouse for a potluck buffet. Santa Claus will once again make the trip from the North Pole.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
