Finding the right fit for college

SALISBURY —Matthew Greene knows how to get your child into the perfect college, but… you may have to redefine your definition of perfect.

On Sunday, May 31, at the Scoville Library from 2 to 4 p.m., he’ll lay it all on the line.

Greene is an adviser (with his father, Howard) at the 40-year-old New York City and Westport, Conn., educational consulting firm, Howard Greene and Associates. Father and son are also co-authors of eight books, the most recent being “Greenes’ Guides to Educational Planning: Making it Into a Top College: 10 Steps to Gaining Admission to Selective Colleges and Universities.

In his talk at Scoville, Greene will discuss what students and their parents can do to be proactive in their search and how they can “stop worrying about things that are out of their control.

Rather than focusing on a dream choice, Greene recommends that families “focus on the fit.

Of course, getting in is only half the battle; the other half, which may concern parents even more, is raising the money to pay for it all.

According to Greene, only 25 percent of the population in this country pays full-freight when it comes to college tuition. Need-based and merit-based scholarships, loans, grants and work-study programs can all help.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
