Florence (Southwell) Gomez

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Florence (Southwell) Gomez, 102, died peacefully  on Nov. 11, 2009, at her home. A town resident since 1910, Florence was born in New York on Aug. 10, 1907. She was the widow of Wesley Francis Gomez.

Fondly remembered by many from her years as a clerk at the Cornwall Bridge post office, in retirement Florence devoted herself to numerous volunteer endeavors. A member of the United Church of Christ in Cornwall Congregational and a former deacon, Florence was also a tireless worker for the charitable efforts of the Cornwall Woman’s Society and the Sharon Hospital Auxiliary.

Florence is survived by her daughter, Consuelo and her husband, Jeffrey Hunter, of Los Angeles; three sons, Francis and his wife, Patricia, of Lakeville, Robert and his wife, Harriet, of North Canaan and Frederic and his wife, Johanne McGinnis, of West Hartford; 10 grandchildren, Susan Vreeland, Sandra Gomez, Mark Gomez, Patti Majesky, Anne Upson, Steven Gomez, Robert Gomez, Gregory Gomez, Thomas Gomez and Margaret Southwell; 19 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Katherine and her husband,  Homer Peckham, of Ellington, Conn.; two nieces and two grandnieces.  She was predeceased by two grandsons, Michael Gomez and Richard Gomez; and her brothers, Robert and William Southwell.

A memorial service in honor of Florence and in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 8 Bolton Hill Road, Cornwall. A reception hosted by the Cornwall Woman’s Society will immediately follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Florence Southwell Gomez Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o National Iron Bank, PO Box 87, Cornwall Bridge, CT 06754.

Arrangements are under the care of the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home in North Canaan.

LIME ROCK — The “All Things Trinity!” art/craft/book show opened Friday, April 19, with a reception at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Pastor Heidi Truax explained that the show is a bit of a grab bag, designed to allow parishioners the chance to demonstrate their talents without the pressure of a juried art show.

SALISBURY — Chartered on Jan. 25, 1949, the Rotary Club of Salisbury is celebrating 75 years of service to the community, a milestone which will be capped by a gala anniversary celebration in the fall and numerous activities throughout 2024.

“We have so much on our plate over the next two to three months, all are exciting, and all are necessary,” club president Bill Spalding told the dozen or so members during the group’s weekly meeting at Noble Horizons on Tuesday, April 9.
