Former Super Saver IGA to be a medical clinic

WINSTED — The Community Health and Wellness Center of Greater Torrington (CHWC) announced the purchase of the Winsted Super Saver IGA building on Monday, March 26.

CHWC is a non-profit organization that offers medical care to residents all throughout the Northwest Corner regardless of their ability to pay, including a sliding fee scale payment plan for patients in financial need.

Located in Torrington, CHWC opened a second location in 2011 as the Winsted Health Center on Spenser Street

The Super Saver building was previously owned by John Dwan  and served as the only grocery store in downtown Winsted for 35 years until its closing in May, 2017.

Previously, CHWC submitted a special permit application to the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission requesting to turn the building into a medical clinic. The commission rejected the application in April 2017, leading CHWC and Dwan to file a lawsuit in response. In December 2017, all three parties reached a settlement, allowing CHWC’s plan to move forward.

As part of the legal settlement, CHWC will open its new location in the back of the Super Saver IGA building.

CHWC will then lease out the 3,500 square feet of space facing Main Street to a tenant for retail use.

According to the purchase deed, which was obtained by The Lakeville Journal from the Town Clerk’s office, CHWC purchased the building from Dwan for $600,000.

According to the town’s tax assessor database, last year the property was appraised at $505,303 and assessed at $353,710.
