Four months after fire, curling club raising funds to rebuild

WINSTED — Remnants of an ice rink are all that is left where the Norfolk Curling Club building once stood at 70 Golf Drive. After hosting events for 55 years, the building was burned down by two alleged arsonists on Dec. 18.The building was completely destroyed in the blaze, along with many irreplaceable items, including the club’s curling stones, unique commemorative plaques and trophies.According to Curling Club President Mary Fanette, the club’s insurance company has paid out $760,000 to cover the losses due to the fire. However, Fanette said, a new curling club structure similar to the one that burned would cost $1.3 to $1.5 million to build. In order to raise the extra $500,000 needed to build a new building, the club has started a formal fundraising drive.“If things go as planned and if we raise enough of the funds that we need, it is possible that we will have a building completed by early December,” Fanette said. “After that, the ice equipment has to be installed and the building needs to be finished inside. It is possible we could be curling this season by January or early February. If things don’t go as planned, then obviously we can’t be open this season. However, I would like to think that we can go on as planned.”The club has set up a special website, www.rocknorfolk.com, to keep residents up-to-date with their fundraising efforts. The first event lined up is a benefit golf tournament to be held at the Norfolk Country Club on Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19.A benefit Memorial Day road race is being planned, but full details for the event have not been announced. As for the alleged arsonists, both Kyle Majewski, 19, of 8 Prock Hill Road, Sandisfield, Mass., and Matthew Carey, 20, of 87 Briarwood Trail, Torrington, had pre-trial hearings at Litchfield Judicial District Courthouse on Tuesday, April 24.Fanette said the club is not planning to file a lawsuit against the alleged arsonists for damages.“I don’t think that this will be something we would pursue,” Fanette said.
