Frances Allen Yerkes

SALISBURY — Frances Allen Yerkes, 70 years old, died on July 12, 2019, at her home in Salisbury. A resident of the town for 32 years, she was a generous caregiver to many as a nurse, an EMT and as a mother and friend.

Franny was born on Jan. 7, 1949, in New York City, the daughter of Elizabeth and Yorke Allen Jr. She grew up in New Canaan, Conn., attended Bennington College, and received an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. 

While raising three children, she returned to school to earn her nursing degree from Dutchess Community College. She worked as a nurse at Noble Horizons until her retirement in 2017. 

For 30 years, Franny was a member of the Salisbury Volunteer Ambulance Service, as an EMT and as the organization’s secretary, providing meticulous notes. 

Franny was a talented pianist and avid hiker, bicyclist and kayaker. She loved playing music with her grandchildren and enjoying local trails and lakes with friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Robin Yerkes Horton, Carolyn Yerkes and Nancy (Yerkes) Greenland; her grandchildren, Ada and Paul Horton, Claire Abida and Eliot and Emma Greenland; and her friend Lee Hayes.

A celebration of Franny’s life will be held at the Salisbury Town Grove on Saturday, Aug. 3, at noon. All are welcome.

Día de los Muertos marks a bittersweet farewell for Race Brook Lodge

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
